London trade print finisher and book binder Cliftons has added inhouse foiling to its portfolio of services with its investment in a Yawa automatic foil stamping machine from Terry Cooper Services. The £1.5m turnover operation specialises in short to medium run PUR, casebound and layflat books.

Tim Clifton, managing director, says: “We do a lot of casebinding and lay flat binding. We bought the system for the casebinding but we also wanted to get into flat sheet trade foiling. It opens up a new market area for us. We work with 120 printers and this is a new service we can now offer them.  “People are always looking for the weird and wonderful and foiling responds to that scenario. Runs are getting shorter and systems are more affordable enabling the service to be added cost effectively.” The efficient and easy to operate Yawa delivers accurate, adjustable impression for foil stamping, embossing and die-cutting. It has a programmable colour touch screen control system. missed sheet detector and four independent heating zones with digital control. Two cross pull foil rewind units to provide excellent foil economy 2900 impressions per hour with a massive 110 tons of pressure. It is easy to change from job to job or from form foil stamping to die-cutting. Automatic feeder rolls back quickly to give easy access for make-ready. Its air blast system of the foil stamping machine helps to separate foil from stock on critical jobs.

He adds: “We chose it because it can do long or short runs. The removeable feeder means we can push 50 sheets through or add the feeder and complete a 30,000 run. We can be very flexible.”

“It was up and running immediately and from day two it was in production. We have a die-cutter that is similar to set up so the skill set was here. The learning curve was zero. Now we are looking forward to promoting the service.”
